Managing Working Relationships

Ineffective business relationships between a manager and a subordinate are often blamed on the subordinate’s unwillingness to ‘fit in’, the boss’s lack of flexibility or understanding or simply a ‘clash of personalities’.

The result is often that the subordinate will leave the business. Profiles research indicates that over 30% of employees leave their company because they are unhappy with management. It’s the single biggest reason for staff leaving.

And yet, these people are often not poor workers, they may well contribute successfully to the future of the business but they have simply not been able to make a connection with their boss. Why?

The main reason is the inherent inability that most of us to have to see things through the eyes of someone else. If they don’t think and act the way we would, we don’t understand them. And it cuts both ways. As the subordinate, we often can’t understand why our boss doesn’t see or do things the way we do. All in all a recipe for disaster.

Profiles Workforce Compatibility assessment allows managers and their subordinates to gain a much clearer understanding of what makes them both ‘tick’ and how they should be managing each other both upwards and downwards.

As well as providing an excellent opportunity for managers to exercise their coaching skills, it can also contribute where relationships have developed into conflict, which is hugely counter-productive, both for the parties concerned and the greater organisation around them.
