Management

Did you know...

  • 96% of UK organisations believe that poor performance is a problem?

  • 80% believe line managers lack skills to deal with poor performance?

  • 39% believe the culture in their organisation is tolerant of poor performance?

  • 67% believe poor performance affects
productivity and 25% believe it leads
    to lower profitability?

(Taken from an on-line survey of 796 UK companies conducted in December 2005 by Personnel Today and Chiumento.)

In addition to managing the day to day performance of their department, managers have key tasks in relation to the performance of their staff, key amongst them are Motivation and Training.

Motivation

Many managers, without realising it, start with the best intentions yet end up demotivating their staff.

How managers demotivate their staff:

  • Rewarding the wrong things.
For instance, when you say you want behaviour that pleases customers, yet give promotions and bonuses to those who push through the greatest number of customers regardless of service.

  • Signalling right and turning left.
That is, when you say you want to put the customer first and then create workplace rules and procedures that make it difficult to follow the precept.

  • Implementing unnecessary rules, processes, and procedures.
In general, when an employee doesn't understand why a rule is in place, it will get in the way of good service to customers.

  • Introducing constant change.
If there's constant downsizing, reorganisation, or reengineering, employees will quickly turn off their discretionary effort and begin to deliver the minimum performance to do their jobs.

Does this sound familiar? All too often managers don't realise the impact their decisions have on their staff. The key question, however, is how do you find out what motivates your staff?

For the answer, contact Profiles and let us show you how.

Training

Every business recognises the need for training but all too often takes a 'one size fits all' approach. Worse than this, in trying to provide inclusive training it can be targeted at the lowest common denominator and provide little in the way of development for your better performers.

  • Is your training targeted to the individual requirements of your staff?

  • Do you get value for money out of your spend on training?

  • Do you know how to ensure that you do?

Using psychometric testing, Profiles can help you to identify the specific coaching requirements of individual employees and allow you to direct your training budget into those areas where you can expect the greatest return.

Profiles Checkpoint 360 will allow you to see what's going on in your organisation. The Profile XT will tell you on a one by one basis why it's happening.
